Feeling Hot, Hot, Hot

April 27, 2008

What started out as a low grade fever changed real quick.  Once you get a fever they start you on antibiotics becasue during chemo your immune system is wiped right out.  They started me on the basic antibiotics which did nothing.  My fever continued to rise.  They tried more antibiotics but nothing.  After four days of trying to get my fever under control and trying every antibiotic they had my fever continued to rise.  I remember the Infectous Doctor coming in to my room one morning and just sitting and looking at me with a confused look on his face.  He informed me that he had no idea what was going on in my body and why they were not able to get my fever under control.  He told me that they were going to try the last anti-biotic they had and then they didn’t know what they were going to do if that didn’t work.  They tried the antibiotic and that night my fever reached 104.9.  I was hot to touch.  The nurses and my wife were packing me in ice all night long to keep me from burning up.  Still nothing broke.  The next morning with my temperature still at 104.9 they decided they were going to try a Anti fungal drug on me called amphotericin b, also know has shake and bake.  This was a pretty powerful drug that required some heavy pre-medication.  With my temperature no were close to breaking they began the treatment and so began the toughest 24 hours I went through.  Five minutes in to my treatment I began to shake vilently and then had no memory of the next 24 hours.  Found out that i wasn’t medicated properly, so they then had to give me demerol to try to get the shaking under control, but they gave me to much demerol and I began to halusonate.  I was getting mad at the football coach for calling the wrong play, I was mad and confused why the guy in my room was throwing $30 bills out the window, I was sitting up on my bed speaking french and I don’t speak french, I was upset at the cleaner for wanting to take me for a walk.  It was quite the time.  The cool thing was my fever broke but my temperature dropped to low and now they were concerned I was to cold.  ICU was up to see me and they were ready to move me to a place where I would be watched 24/7.  All I remember was waking up the next day and wondering why there were so many people in my room.  My temperature was back to normal, my vitals were fine and the nurses were confused.  They didn’t understand how I could rebound so quickly from what I just went through.

God was with us every step of the way.

More To Come!
