I Still Remember Those Words
April 17, 2008“You are a walking dead man and need to get to the hospital right away”
That is what the doctor said and that is all he said. He did not give me any further info he just scribbled on a piece of paper sealed in an envelope and sent me on my way. I got back into the car and shared what the doctor had said and she started to cry. I remember just rubbing her leg as I drove away assuring her it was nothing more then the flu. The hospital was very close so we pulled in to emergency and walked in and to think we were just here in the morning for an appointment for my wife. I handed my sealed envelope to the triage nurse and she opened it. Immediately I was taken into a back room and they were checking my vitals and drawing blood. I thought to my self what great service. It was about 15 minutes later that a nurse returned to the waiting room and told my that they had some results back and I could not go anywhere. Another 30minutes passed when another nurse came to give me a hospital gown and escorted me back to a cubical in the emergency room. I still remeber thinking all the time that i just had the flu and it was nothing more then that.
After 10 minutes in my cubical the doctor came in and held no punches. “Mr. Brown, you have cancer, actually a very aggressive form of blood cancer you are very sick and need to start an aggressive form of chemotherapy”.
I was stunned. The first thing I did was look at my wife and say, “I will never get a chance to hold our baby”. I though I was going to die. The reason I said that was I had just had two people close to me lose their life to this deadly disease.
That night I had four blood transfusions to bring my blood count up to normal. The doctors were amazed at how I still had my eyes open with blood counts so low. I also had a cat scan done to see if there was anything wrong with my head because of the intense headaches I was having and was actually wheeled down the hallway I was sitting in hours before has an excited dad to get the first look at is baby, it was very weird. After the blood I felt much better but still had no hope on the inside until…
More to come.
I’m reading! Love the suspense!
